Where and How
I almost always work with families in and around their homes. Children feel more comfortable and relaxed in familiar surroundings making the experience informal and, above all, enjoyable.
I usuallly split the session in two. First, a series of 'studio' shots in front of a black background and a further series in suitable locations around the home/garden/park etc. This way you get the best of both worlds...the 'clean', classic photographs against a plain background and the personalised, casual, 'reportage style' photographs set in and around the family home.
I avoid unnatural and uncomfortable poses. My photography is all about capturing the personality of your children and your relationship with them. Smiles, laughter, energy, fun, spontaneity.
The average session takes about 60-90 mins.
Most of the family photography is done on Sundays when both hardworking parents are around (!) but if you can do a midweek shoot then availability is much better. I can't do any Saturdays as I am a fully booked wedding photographer too.
What to Wear
Plain, casual clothes are generally best. White clothing, black clothing and heavy patterns are to be avoided if possible. Highly visible logos will date the photographs in years to come. Having said that, it is important that everyone wears something they feel comfortable in rather than feeling 'dressed up'.
