| How I work: My aim To create beautiful, simple, natural photographs of you and your children. Where and How I almost always work with families in their homes. Children feel more comfortable and relaxed in familiar surroundings making the experience informal and, above all, enjoyable. For larger groups the studio may be more suitable. Location shoots, perhaps in the park, are also an option. I usuallly split the session in two. First, a series of 'studio' shots in front of a black background and a further series in suitable locations around the home/garden/park or common. This way you get the best of both worlds...the 'clean', classic photographs against a plain background and the personalised, casual, 'reportage style' photographs set in the family home. I avoid unnatural and uncomfortable poses. My photography is all about capturing the personality of your children and your relationship with them. Smiles, laughter, energy, fun, spontaneity. The average session takes about 60-90 mins. Most of the family photography is done on Sundays when both hardworking parents are around (!) but if you can do a midweek shoot then availability is much better. I can't do any Saturdays as I am a fully booked wedding photographer too. What to wear Plain, casual clothes are generally best. White clothing and heavy patterns are to be avoided if possible as they will be distracting in the final photograph. Highly visible logos will date the photographs in years to come. Having said that, it is important that everyone wears something they feel comfortable in rather than feeling 'dressed up'. Booking and Price Please email for pricing details What is included? After the shoot you will be able to view and purchase the photographs on your own area of my web site. I will also provide you with paper versions of the order forms with instructions on how to order prints of your photographs 'offline'. All prints are charged extra. Queries? Email me if you have any further questions or to make a booking. The philosophy behind my family photography workshops... Whether you want to take better photos of your own kids or to develop this side of your business, photographing families and children is not just about photographic technique. In fact, I believe it only accounts for about a relatively small percentage. The vast majority is about who you are before, during and after the shoot, the relationship you build with the family or managing your own kids and understanding what you or others want from the photographs. Get this right and the rest will follow. Yes, a certain level of photographic knowledge and technique is important but I don't think it's the most important factor in being a successful family/children photographer. The key is to balance the the technical aspects with everything else The workshops I offer will help you create this balance. Who am I? I am a Surrey-based wedding and family photographer. I photograph about 70 weddings a year and about 120 families. In 2007 I was voted Photographer of the Year at the Wrapit Wedding Industry Awards having been in business for 3 years. I got my first SLR camera in 2001. It was a gift from my parents and was totally out of the blue. I had never had an interest in photography. I started messing around with the camera, walking the streets of London with it and taking it to friends’ weddings and photographing the children of anyone who'd let me. I liked the way it heightened my awareness of my surroundings. I got real pleasure from making a photograph I liked. I got even more pleasure when other people liked my photos. I took a beginners evening course. My interest grew. The job I was in at the time was going nowhere and I was ready for a change. Several factors convinced me that life is too short to spend it doing something that didn’t get me out of bed in the morning. I didn’t want to look back and wonder "what if...". I decided to become a photographer. My wife was six months pregnant. For 18 months I developed my photography business whilst doing a full-time job. I worked every evening after work and every weekend. In April 2004 I quit my job and became a full-time photographer. 3 years later I was voted Wedding photographer of the Year at the Wrapit Wedding Industry Awards. My family photography workshops are designed to help you develop your own family/children photography, whether for business or for pleasure, to give you the confidence to go for it and make it work, to make a living doing something you love and enjoy (if you want!). If you own a digital SLR and want to photograph weddings and/or children & families my workshops will help you achieve this. 4 years ago I was starting out, just like you. Pick up the phone. Send me an email. Start now. |
